Elk are known for their large size. Adult males, known as bulls, can weigh between 600 to 1,000 pounds and stand about 4.6 to 5.6 feet tall at the shoulder. Adult females, known as cows, are smaller, with an average weight of 450 to 600 pounds Male elk are distinguished by their impressive antlers, which can span up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) in length and weigh as much as 40 pounds (18 kilograms). These antlers are shed and regrown each year. Elk are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and mountains. They are often associated with the Rocky Mountains in North America.
